Safe Home, Safe Holidays

At Evans, Ewan & Brady Insurance Agency, we want a safe and happy holiday season for all. The combination of fireplaces, candles, Christmas trees, children and pets can make our homes more accident-prone this time of year.

Tree Safety

If you have a Christmas tree in your home with small children and pets around, remember to put small or breakable ornaments out of reach.

Curious children and playful pets can easily topple a tree -- use safety gates if you have especially small, active or curious little ones around.

Beware of toxic decorations like old tinsel and some older ornaments whose enamel may contain led.

If you enjoy a fresh cut tree, keep it watered so that it does not try out and become good kindling for a fire.

Fire Safety

Enjoy a fire safely with a screen, and if you have them, close the doors to the fireplace at the end of the night.

If you like the effect of fire salts but be warned they may contain heavy metals that may cause upset stomach or vomiting if ingested.

Keep candle wicks trimmed to 1/8 inch to 1/4 inch before lighting.

Never, ever leave burning candles unattended, and double check all candles are snuffed out before leaving the house or going to bed.

Home insurance provides peace of mind, but good safety habits are a way to prevent accidents this holiday season.
