Currently, a vehicle owner in the State of Texas is required, at a minimum, to carry the following limits of coverage on their auto insurance policy:

  • $25,000 Bodily injury for each injured person with a minimum of $50,000 cumulative for multiple-person injury accidents.
  • $25,000 Property damage liability for property damage caused by an accident.

With the cost of medical bills increasing, you probably realize in looking at those numbers that they are a bit out of whack with current medical expense levels. That is why the state of Texas is increasing its minimum auto liability limits on January 1, 2011. The new limits will require you to have at least:

  • $30,000 bodily injury for each person injured with a minimum cumulative limit of $60,000 per accident.
  • The $25,000 property damage limit will remain the same.

Auto InsuranceHaving legally required auto insurance liability minimums helps to guarantee that people who are injured or suffer from property damage after an accident are recompensed. But the legal minimums do not necessarily give you all the insurance coverage that you might need.

For instance, if you are driving a car with three people inside and you have an accident, $60,000 may cover the treatment for injuries of two of the passengers, but it may not cover any of the medical expenses for the third. If the accident is your fault, that makes you liable for the additional medical expenses not covered by the policy.

The property damage minimum of $25,000 can also be just a small drop in the bucket if you cause an accident that involves a luxury car or other property like someone’s home. And again, without enough insurance coverage, you will be liable for making the payments that exceed your insurance policy’s limit.

Working with an insurance agent will allow you to determine what the most reasonable policy limits really are for your area and amounts that can adequately protect your assets.
